Mission and Outreach
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19)
A Missionary ParishThrough prayer and His guidance, lay ministers in the Mission and Outreach Commission serve in God’s mission field evangelizing and reaching out to people in the neighborhood surrounding the Parish Church of St. Helena, our state, nation, and on foreign soil, too. The Rt. Rev. Alden Hathaway, our Bishop in Residence, explains that expanding God’s ministry means building the missionary parish.
Mission is the activity of the church aimed at sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. The Mission and Outreach Commission provides opportunities for St. Helena’s parish to minister to the spiritual, physical, and financial needs of our brothers and sisters, both locally and globally, in the name of Jesus Christ. As you will see below, there are many opportunities to serve others. For more information, please contact Vestry Representatives Jane Manos at 521-8488 or John Gray at 524-0255.

VBS/Construction Youth Mission Trip
VBS/Construction Youth Mission Trip
July 5-12, 2010
The annual DR Vacation Bible School/Construction Mission Trip to the parish of Santa Cruz in the community of Santa Fe, Dominican Republic, is July 5-12, 2010. Last year, the St. Helena’s team worked with Fr. Felix Encarnacion and his parishioners at a Vacation Bible School and on a construction mission. On previous trips, the team has painted the church, helped to build a school, painted the school, and helped to build an outdoor basketball court. The biggest project, however, is the building of Christian relationships with Dominicans through each year’s Vacation Bible School. More than 300 kids pour into the classes each year for worship, crafts, games, and snacks. Important gifts to the local Episcopal school each year are scholarships. Without them, few students would attend the Colegio Episcopal “Santa Cruz” and probably not the public schools either, since they are a distance away from the parish. Scholarships are $300 each for the year. For more information, please contact Jane Manos, 521-8488, or Jim Cato, 522-2009. Must be 16 years of age to be a team member.

Friday Nights in Washington Street Park
Second Friday of the month
St. Helena’s is dinner host on the second Friday night of the month from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. The Christian fellowship and relationships with our neighbors in the Northwest Quadrant continue to flourish, with great growth in the number of parishioners joining in this ministry. The number of diners has grown from 30 regulars to approximately 50-60, with six other area churches regularly participating throughout the year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many residents have been helped with doctor’s appointments and transportation, and several are attending Bible studies and church services. Every Friday night, a simple meal is offered to all who gather at this small downtown city park at the corner of Washington and Newcastle streets. A family-style gathering under the park’s shelter offers dinner, singing, prayers, and shared Christian fellowship. St. Helena’s needs missionaries with a gift of providing prayer, music, soup, sandwiches, cookies, beverage, paper products, etc. For more information on this local outreach and how you can help, please contact Tamy Cargill at 592-1367 or Abby Morris at 812-3665.

Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner
Thursday, November 25, 2010
Providing Thanksgiving dinner for the community is a favorite tradition at St. Helena’s. Dinners are served to our guests from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. and are also packed up for delivery to shut-ins. Cooked turkeys and other traditional homemade Thanksgiving foods are donated by many parishioners. Parishioners cook, set tables, serve, and clean up, in a wonderful spirit of Christian love and sharing. Due to the hard work of more of more than 100 lay ministers, the 2009 Community Thanksgiving Dinner was bigger and better than ever before with more than 1,300 meals served to those who walked through the door and 650 meals were delivered. Join us for this happy occasion of service to the community. We need volunteers to help. Volunteers are needed to buy and cook a turkey, casseroles, vegetables, desserts; deliver meals; cook in the kitchen; carve turkeys; serve; make table arrangements. Monetary donations are welcome. For more information, please contact Roz Dixon at 522-1712, ext. 220.
The Angel Tree
Just before Christmas each year, gifts are purchased, wrapped, and delivered by parishioners to members of our community in need of help during the holiday. If you would like to participate in this warm holiday tradition, take a name from the tree (that is in the Parish Hall during Advent) and purchase a gift for that person. Place your wrapped package under the tree, and St. Helena’s lay ministers will deliver the gift. For more information, contact Roz Dixon at 522-1712, ext. 220.
