Where There’s A Will naming the Preservation Trust
There’s A Way to preserve St. Helena’s Church

Purpose:
Established in 1990, The Preservation Trust for Historic St. Helena’s Church is an endowment fund whose whole purpose is to accumulate and manage assets, the income from which is made available to the Vestry for restoration and preservation of our historic church and all its supporting facilities, including the Parish House, rectories, classrooms, offices, and the historic churchyard and surrounding wall. Three prioritized goals guide progress of the Trust.

* The first goal, which has priority over the others, is to ensure that funds are available to provide for the long-term preservation, and restoration whenever necessary, of our cherished historic church building. Presently, the Trust’s endowment fund is producing sufficient income to accomplish this goal.

* The second goal is to provide for the preservation, and restoration when necessary, of all of our church’s supporting facilities. Except for routine maintenance, and barring any unforeseen catastrophic damage, the Trust’s fund is also currently providing this support.

* The third and final goal is for the Trust’s endowment fund to grow to the point that it will earn sufficient funding to take care of the first two goals above as well as all routine day-to-day maintenance and operating costs of our church and all its supporting facilities. When this goal (currently estimated at $5 million) is reached, it will no longer be necessary to budget critical funding from our church’s stewardship-supported operating fund. This means that the future pledges of all parishioners can be devoted entirely to the many vital ministries our clergy, Vestry, staff, and congregation pursue. What a wonderful way to glorify God and our Savior Jesus Christ. The Trust will need continuing support to reach this final goal.

Memorial Gifting:  The Trust, with the full support of our clergy and Vestry, encourages several forms of memorial gifting.

* First and foremost, the Trust promotes the naming of the Preservation Trust in a parishioner’s will or living trust. Several attorneys within our congregation have graciously offered to draft codicils to wills or amendments to living trusts free of charge for those who wish to do this. The following is a current listing of those attorneys:

Jim Grimsley, 524-1116, PO Box 2055 or 611 Bay Street, Beaufort, SC 29902
George O’Kelley, 524-3233, PO Box 1072 or 715 Bay Street, Beaufort, SC 29902
Ken Tootle, 524-0424, 998 Ribaut Road, Beaufort, SC 29902
Marc Fisher, 522-9000, PO Box 2358 or 811 Craven Street, Beaufort, SC 29902

Parishioner’s who pledge such codicils or bequests are requested to contact any member of the Board of Trustees to advise of their commitment. Policy precludes the Trust being notified of the amount of any such planned giving, only the fact that a pledge or commitment has been made. Trust policy then provides that any parishioner doing this be issued a gold “1712″ lapel pin. These parishioners are referred to as our “1712′ers” and are encouraged to wear their pins during all church-related activities to encourage other parishioners to join their ranks.

* The other form of gifting most frequently utilized by parishioners and friends of St. Helena’s consists of making donations to the Trust in memory of deceased parishioners. When such memorial or living gifts are $500 or more, Trust policy also provides that these donors be issued silver “1712″ lapel pins. Additionally, the Trust welcomes any other form of gifting such as tangible property or appreciated common stock.
