Stewardship

Saint Helena's Episcopal Church

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal,
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust consumes and
where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is,
there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)

Annual Stewardship

A perusal of this website will indicate the myriad ministries that go on in our parish. The primary focus of all we do is to glorify God by glorifying his Son (John 6:28-29). Our tithes and offerings are a way that each of us can be an active participant in each of these ministries.

The clergy and lay leadership at St. Helena’s seek to hold up the authority of scripture in all that we do, including our giving. The tithe (10 percent) is the biblical standard for giving. God intends our giving as a blessing to us. Through our tithes, God promises to pour out blessings on us all:

By transforming our hearts: God does not want our money—he wants our hearts! Giving draws our hearts toward God and gives us joy just as sin pushes us from God. By enriching our lives: Whoever sows generously will also reap generously! (2 Corinthians 9:6) By changing others’ lives through our generosity: God will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness! (2 Corinthians 9:10)

We do not intend to coerce our community to tithe: Each should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). We intend only to share the promise of scripture!

The Preservation Trust for Historic St. Helena's Church, Inc

Where There's A Will naming the Preservation Trust
There's A Way to preserve St. Helena's Church

The Preservation Trust is an endowment fund, the purpose of which is to raise and invest capital and to make the income available to the vestry for the restoration and preservation of our historic church building and supporting buildings. The trust was established in 1990 by parish vote.

The money comes from memorial gifts made at the time of a parishioner’s death, from designated gifts made by parishioners in their wills, and from those wonderfully generous people who make a gift simply to increase the size of the trust. People who make a gift via their will are entitled to wear a 1712 lapel pin.

Donations of all sizes are welcome; there is no minimum. Real estate and other items of value are welcome as well. Free legal help is available to add a codicil to your will.

Preservation Trust Sets New Goal of $5 Million

It sounds like a lot of money. And it is. But the asset value of the church’s real property (the historic church block, the rectory, parish hall, and the offices and classrooms) is about $6.5 million. Five million dollars is 77 percent of that asset value that the Trust is intended to preserve and protect. The Trustees feel that the Trust needs a financial buffer of that size to protect our beloved property against the steady deterioration of our 280-year-old church, the 193-year-old rectory, and the 43-year-old parish hall. There are also weather-related hazards to consider.

It is a big goal but thoughtful and generous parishioners have already given a great start to the Trust with a current investment portfolio of $1.7 million. We need everyone’s help with memorials and codicils to reach the goal.
